RUTH'S OWN STORY
“Having made my way through my own pain, I know how overwhelming the journey can look at the beginning. When my husband Don died of inoperable cancer, it felt like my whole world was turned upside down. I believed the pain of losing him would go on forever. It didn’t. In moments of despair, I learned ways to keep myself going forward. It wasn’t easy and there were no shortcuts, but as time went on, I discovered that the pain did get easier and the small pleasures of life did return. Having been in graduate school when Don died, I eventually received my degree as a psychotherapist. A few years later, my daughter Laurie also became a clinical social worker. By that time, I’d begun running bereavement groups and counseling the widowed. Laurie also went on to work with the bereaved. We were both struck by how the inability to concentrate affected people who were mourning. When asked to recommend books, neither of us could find anything that took into account what our clients experienced and the difficulties they had attempting to read”.
